Ahh Summer!

After spending two weeks on the sandy beaches of Mexico, I returned home to enjoy the rest of my summer vacation. And by enjoy, I mean working countless hours every day on my TpT store. One of my colleagues said to me one day, “I don’t know how you do it.” She meant, how do I find the time, energy and mental capacity to work on making products after teaching full time. Honestly, working on my products is relaxing to me. I get so laser focused on what I am doing that I usually can’t and don’t want to pull myself away from it. It makes me forget about the stressors in my life. It takes me away- like reading a good book.

Speaking of books…while browsing one of my favorite bilingual teacher Facebook sites, I ran across a post from a teacher asking for book recommendations on bilingual education. Responses flooded the post of the different books teachers had read or were presently reading. I thought, WOW! Teachers have to be some of the most dedicated people on the planet. I mean, who else spends their vacations thinking of ways to improve their craft and staying abreast of the latest developments in the industry? I suppose there are others, but I am still impressed.

My summer reading comprises of a list of books to keep up my Spanish language skills. Besides the trade books I brought home from my classroom to read, I managed to find a few books in a bookstore in Mexico to read in Spanish. I picked up Britney Spear’s autobiography titled, La Mujer Que Soy.

I also bought a few short “children’s” books in Spanish. I have the word children in quotation marks because one of them titled En La Oscuridad is supposed to be for kids, but the content is not age appropriate, IMO. I will not be putting it in my classroom library. But it was a good read in a dark, disturbing kind of way. It’s about a six year old girl whose mother abandons her and she finds these other street kids to live with in the streets of Mexico. It provoked many emotions while reading, which leads me to rate it well, even though I had some issues with the delivery.

The summer flies by so quickly. It’s already July and I am hoping everyone is taking the time to do those things that brings them joy. Comment below and let me know what that looks like for you. Until next time!
